We Want The Y

In 1994 Lower Providence received Montgomery County’s first Open Space Grant to save the General Washington Country Club.  The monies were used to tear down the Club, Ice Skating Rink, Pool and to upgrade the golf course.  Over time what was supposed to be a jewel preserved for all Lower Providence residents for all time has morphed into a high priced Swim club, Golf Course and Eatery that shares its name with an upscale retirement community.

The YMCA has been looking for a place to expand around here for decades.  They were rebuffed in the mid 2000’s when agreements could not be reached.  The YMCA built a great facility in the Spring Ford School District – it should have been in Audubon.

Our kids who want to use a good YMCA have to travel there or to the Phoenixville Y.  Again over the last year the YMCA has looked to expand at the old General Washington site (now the Club at Shannondell).  Ideas bounced back and forth.  Recently talks broke down.

The YMCA is a great outfit to have as a neighbor and corporate citizen.  This year Democratic Candidate Jim Donahue wants to put these talks back out front for all of Lower Providence to decide if we need a decent place locally for kids to learn to swim, play basketball, or for seniors to have a larger community gathering place.

His opponent in November does not want the Y but prefers there to be a high priced golf course to remain.
This is a stark difference in direction for Lower Providence.  Do we serve a greater number of people who won’t have to pay as much or a smaller number of folks who can pay more.

November will be interesting.
